THE BETTERDAY WEEKLY
What Alberta is eating this week.
By the time Sunday rolls around, most of us have had at least one night where the fridge was a stranger and dinner needed to show up on its own. This week's menu had plenty of options for that, from the Halifax Hero Donair Bowl, a proper 2:00 AM classic, to the Mac Daddy Burger Bowl, which talks like a burger and eats like a powerbowl. Here is how the week shook out.

Turmeric.
The sunshine-colored rhizome that stains everything it loves.
Turmeric is a rhizome, an underground stem that grows sideways beneath a leafy tropical plant. It belongs to the ginger family, and the two look like cousins when you see them side by side. Dig one up and you get knobby, finger-like pieces with papery brown skin.
Slice a fresh turmeric rhizome and the inside is a deep orange. That color comes from a pigment called curcumin, which dyes cutting boards, countertops and fingertips with great enthusiasm. It has been used as a natural yellow dye for fabric for a very long time, so your sponge is in good company.
