Tomato.
The fruit that sneaks into the vegetable aisle.
Botanically, a tomato is a fruit. It grows from the flower of the plant and holds its seeds inside, which is the standard definition of a fruit. It just happens to be savory, so it gets sorted with the vegetables anyway.
The tomato belongs to the nightshade family, alongside potatoes, eggplants and peppers. The plant is a vine, and the stems and leaves are covered in tiny hairs. Pick a vine-ripened tomato and you can smell that green, grassy scent on the stem.
