THE BETTERDAY WEEKLY
What Alberta is eating this week.
By Wednesday most of us are running on good intentions and whatever is closest to the fridge, which is where a bowl like the Halifax Hero Donair Bowl earns its keep with its shawarma-spiced rice and sweet garlic sauce. Others spent the week chasing a little Southern heat with the Mardi Gras Cajun Chicken Linguini. Here is how the week of October 25 shook out.

Turnips.
The round root with a leafy secret.
The turnip is a swollen taproot, the main root of the plant, plumped up to store energy. Above the ground it grows a tuft of leaves that are also good to eat. So one plant gives you two ingredients, which feels like a fair deal.
Turnips belong to the Brassica family, the same group as cabbage, broccoli and mustard. Slice into a raw one and you may catch a sharp, peppery whiff, a family trait. Heat tends to soften that bite and bring out a gentler, sweeter side.
